San Francisco, CA (5/25/06) - A federal court will hear arguments today in a lawsuit brought by San Leandro, California gun dealer Trader Sports, in a last-ditch attempt to prevent revocation of its federal firearms license. The gun shop is slated to lose its federal license on June 1, 2006, after committing "thousands of violations" of federal law, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
In advance of the hearing, the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence issued a new report, Trading in Death, highlighting decades of legal violations by Trader Sports.
Sacramento, CA (5/24/06) - In a rare release of information the gun industry has tried to keep secret, the Justice Department has revealed data naming the gun dealers who rank as the five leading sellers of guns traced to crimes.
"We commend Senator Schumer for his legislation to ensure that law enforcement, and the public, have access to the crime gun trace information that exposes the gun dealers who contribute to the flood of illegal guns. We also commend Mayor Bloomberg for his courageous lawsuit to hold accountable fifteen gun dealers who were caught red-handed making sales to buyers they thought were acting as 'straw buyers' for criminals and gun traffickers."
Washington, D.C. (5/11/06) - The Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence today released a report documenting a concerted effort by the gun lobby, its allies in Congress, and the Bush Administration to suppress crime gun trace data exposing the complicity of gun dealers in supplying the illegal gun market in order to aid gunmakers in civil court cases and shield the industry from negative public attention.
Washington, D.C. (5/3/06) - New data released by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) shows that 97 rogue gun dealers had 11,840 guns "disappear" from their shops in fiscal year 2005. These dealers accounted for an astonishing 96 percent of all guns that ATF identified as missing from 3,083 federal firearms licensees that ATF inspected in 2005. The remaining 2,986 gun dealers inspected in 2005 had less than 500 missing guns.
Washington, D.C. (5/1/06) - The Brady Center submitted a letter to the U.S. House Judiciary Committee opposing H.R. 5092, a bill that would gut the ability of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to revoke federal firearms licenses of corrupt gun dealers. If enacted, H.R. 5092 would make it virtually impossible for ATF to shut down rogue gun dealers who repeatedly violate federal law.
