Free Help for Gun Victims with Potential Claims

The Legal Action Project is a national public interest law program dedicated to reducing gun violence. The Project seeks to achieve reform of the gun industry by providing pro bono legal representation to individual victims of gun violence and their families in suits against gun manufacturers and sellers. The Project also assists in the defense of reasonable gun laws when they are attacked in the courts.

  • Challenging Gun Sellers Who Supply the Illegal Market
The Legal Action Project has pioneered the use of damages suits by gun violence victims to challenge reckless industry practices that lead to gun crime. Project lawyers won the first appeals court decision in history that a gun manufacturer can be liable for negligent conduct increasing the risk of criminal violence. In a single year, we recovered over $4.4 million in damages for gun violence victims against irresponsible gun dealers and manufacturers. We also have won court orders requiring gun sellers to alter their business practices to keep guns out of the wrong hands.
  • Representing Cities and Counties to Demand Gun Industry Reform.
The Project has represented over two dozen urban municipalities in landmark lawsuits against gun manufacturers and sellers seeking to hold the industry accountable for the public costs of gun violence fueled by industry misconduct. The Project's cases for these violence-plagued communities have won precedent-setting rulings in the Supreme Courts of Ohio and Indiana and in the New Jersey Court of Appeals.

  • Helping Victims of Gun Violence to Demand Safer Guns and Safer Gun Storage.
Because no federal agency has the power to enforce safety standards for guns, product liability lawsuits provide the gun industry's only incentive to produce safer guns. The Project brings innovative lawsuits seeking damages for the industry's refusal to install feasible safety mechanisms like load indicators and child-proof locking systems. Our lawyers brought the first case ever filed seeking damages against a gun maker for its failure to "personalize" guns to prevent access by unauthorized users. In one of our cases, a state appeals court held that gun makers can be liable for failing to use safety features to prevent children and teens from using guns.
